A Quebec elementary school had to cut short a field trip after some students discovered a dead body in a wooded area near the southern city of Sherbrooke on May 2.

Noovo Info, which first reported the incident in French, said the students who made the discovery are from the local Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire elementary school.

“Despite these unfortunate circumstances, the day was still peaceful for most students at the school,” school principal Brigitte Leclerc wrote in an email to parents, reported Noovo.

Leclerc noted that a team of specialized workers was helping the school faculty to provide support to the students after they returned to school.

“Rest assured that we have the well-being of your children at heart and that we are making every effort to ensure the necessary support for the students at the school,” Leclerc said, according to Noovo.

The school management also advised parents to remain attentive to what their children have to say for the next few days.

The Sherbrooke police told the media outlet on May 2 that investigations are underway.

The Epoch Times reached out to the police for information on the deceased person, but didn’t hear back by publication time.
