Two salt products under the President’s Choice (PC) brand have been recalled due to plastic pieces found in them, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says.
PC’s Mediterranean Sea Salts and Himalayan Pink Rock Salts are the affected products, according to a notification posted by the federal agency on Jan. 2.
“Do not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected products,” the CFIA said.
Canadian grocery retailer Loblaw Companies Limited initiated the national recall for both products. The notification did not indicate if anyone has gotten ill or injured from consuming the products. It also did not provide a description of the plastic pieces.
Specifically, the affected Mediterranean Sea Salts product is the 360-gram packages with Universal Product Code (UPC) 0 60383 97655 2, and the affected Himalayan Pink Rock Salts product is the 390-gram packages with UPC 0 60383 18288 5.
For both products, the recall affects all packages with best-before dates of up to and including Jan. 17, 2026.
Similar Recalls
The presence of plastic pieces in food products has been identified in other items as well in recent years.
On Dec. 6, 2024, PC brand Tellicherry Black Peppercorns were recalled for that reason. Affected packages are those weighing 180 grams with a UPC of 0 60383 97657 6 and a best-before date ranging from May 2025 to Jan. 17, 2026.
In September 2022, various brands of salad products were similarly recalled due to the presence of pieces of plastic. The recall involved the brands PC, Compliments, Fresh Attitude, and Your Fresh Market. The recalled products were items that contained vegetables such as spinach, lettuces, and kale. They were distributed in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
Other food brands have also had products recalled due to plastic pieces. Balocco’s Ciambelle biscuits in the cream and egg flavour were recalled in May 2024, with the distribution indicated as being in Quebec only. Two months earlier, a CFIA notification alerted that various ground beef products under the Canada 653 brand had a “Food - Extraneous Material” issue. The food safety agency said the affected ground beef products contained pieces of plastic and were distributed in British Columbia and Yukon.
In October 2024, the agency notified consumers that certain pizza-flavoured chicken nuggets sold across Canada had plastic pieces found in them. The recall was initiated by Canadian food product manufacturer Sofina Foods Inc. The affected product is the 1.3-kilogram packages of nuggets with a UPC of 0 60249 00973 8 and a best-before date of July 25, 2025.
Another major recall last March involved Block & Barrel’s Chicken Base Paste that was used in hotels and restaurants across British Columbia and Quebec. The CFIA said the paste was recalled “due to pieces of plastic and metal.”
The presence of metal fragments was also found in several brands of bread and buns sold in Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador last year. In November 2024, the CFIA issued a notification listing a total of 37 products from Country Harvest, Deli World, D'Italiano, Giant Value, Great Value, No Name, PC, and Wonder that were recalled “due to pieces of metal.”
