Police were called to the scene of a shooting Monday afternoon outside a high school in Toronto’s East End, which has left one male killed and a teenager injured with life-threatening injuries.

The shooting occurred outside Woburn Collegiate Institute in Scarborough. The injured male teenager was transported to a trauma centre by ambulance with life-threatening injuries, according to the Toronto Police via Twitter.

At 3:22 p.m. local time, police received reports that shots were fired near the intersection of Ellesmere Road and Markham Road. Toronto Police posted on Twitter, “One person, a male, has been pronounced deceased at hospital.”

Police say the suspect has fled the scene.

Toronto mother Nazia Khan said her 15-year-old daughter in grade 10 texted her just before 5 p.m. saying: “Mom, it’s really scary. We are locked down ... We are really quiet.”

Khan’s son, age 14, also goes to Woburn Collegiate Institute but was home sick Monday.

When Khan received her daughter’s terrified texts, she ran upstairs to get her husband and they rushed to the school.

She said she arrived to find the school surrounded by police and yellow crime scene tape, and parents were not allowed to enter the school. Khan told The Epoch Times that at first, she thought it was a joke. “My daughter was panicking, texting me, ’mom please help.'”
According to the Toronto District School Board, Woburn and nearby Woburn Junior Public School were placed in lockdown. At 4:30 p.m., parents were told by the Toronto Police Twitter account that students would be exiting the school on the east side “with the assistance of police.”

“My daughter is still in shock,” said Khan. “I was panicked when I saw so many police cars.”

Toronto Police are asking for those with evidence to come forth.

“As this is now a homicide investigation, police are looking to speak with witnesses, or anyone who may have video of the shooting, or drivers who were in the area at the time and have dash cam footage and may have captured the shooting or suspect fleeing the area to speak with police,” the Toronto Police said in response to an inquiry from The Epoch Times.

Police are looking for a black male wearing a black jacket and a “COVID mask” who was heading west.
