More Than 9,600 DeWALT Lawn Mowers Recalled Over Injury Risk

Close to 10,000 DeWALT battery-powered electric lawn mowers are being recalled due to the risk of injury, according to Health Canada.

The recall, issued on Aug. 15, indicates that owners should stop using the mower immediately if the handle of the machine has gotten wet.

“If water gets into the mower’s handle support while the battery is installed, the mower can fail to shut off when the bail handle is released or start without a key, posing a laceration hazard to the user,” the recall notice said.

DeWALT says when the mower gets wet and water gets into the handle control, it can create an electrical shorting. When this happens, the mower will not turn off.

Health Canada said consumers trying to fix the problem face a laceration risk. Owners are advised to contact DeWALT for a free repair of the machine. Canadians can get in touch with the company by calling DeWALT or visiting their website.

DeWALT says it will replace the upper handle control and wiring harness of the machine. This change has been designed to ensure the mower works even if it gets wet.

An estimated 9,630 units were sold in Canada, Health Canada’s recall says.

The mowers are black, grey, and yellow with DeWALT printed in yellow on the front or side of the machine.

Four models are included in the recall, including two self-propelled models and two push models. The machines have different battery voltages. Model numbers are: DCMWP234U2-CA, DCMWP600X2-CA, DCMWSP256U2-CA, and DCMWSP650Y2-CA.

Model numbers can be found on the rear door of the mower.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says about 46,200 DeWALT mowers are being recalled in the United States. It says only date codes 2023 32-58 through 2024 13-58 are affected by the malfunction. Lawn mowers manufactured after March 2024 (2024 14-58) are not being recalled as they are not affected.

Date codes are printed in yellow on the left side of the mower, just above the left rear wheel, CPSC said.

No injuries have been reported in Canada as of Aug. 8, Health Canada said.

However, DeWALT has received 10 reports of the mowers not shutting off when the bail handle is released, CPSC said in its recall.

CPSC also received one report of a mower starting up without a key inserted, which resulted in a finger laceration. The person injured did not need medical attention, it said.

The mowers, manufactured in China, were imported by Stanley Black & Decker Canada and sold between February and July.
