Several bagel brands distributed to grocery stores across seven provinces are being recalled because they may contain metal fragments.

Bigway, Co-op, Super A, and TGP bagel brands are affected by the recall, according to a Dec. 4 advisory posted by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The ‘class two’ recall is in effect for B.C., Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, the Yukon, and the Northwest Territories. The agency defines a class two recall as a situation presenting moderate risk, where the consumption of the impacted food might lead to short-term or non-life threatening health problems.
The recalled bagels were available for purchase in bags of six and were packaged between Nov. 4 and Nov. 27. The advisory included cheese, sesame, blueberry, multigrain, everything, and plain bagels.

The advisory is geared toward a retail audience to ensure impacted grocery stores remove the items from their shelves, but CFIA noted that consumers should still be vigilant and check the dates on all purchased products.

CFIA is warning anyone who may have purchased a recalled product to dispose of the item or return it to the store where it was purchased.

“The presence of extraneous material in food products may be unpleasant but may not always pose a serious health risk to consumers,” the agency said.
“Regardless of the recall risk level, the CFIA always recommends that people do not consume recalled products.”

Salt Recall

The bagel advisory is part of the ongoing Sifto salt recall in Canada which has been connected to multiple bread, baked good, and frozen food advisories due to the possibility the products contain metal shards. Sifto brand Hy·Grade Salt was first recalled by CIFA on Oct. 30.
A major recall was issued last month for several brands of bread sold in  Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland and Labrador. A total of 37 products from Country Harvest, Deli World, D'Italiano, Giant Value, Great Value, No Name, President’s Choice, and Wonder were listed in the Nov. 4 advisory.
Other recalls linked to Sifto salt include pita bread products; Stuyver’s brand bread; Les Croissants d'Olivier brand French bread; Tartistes baked goods, Olymel, Compliments, Great Value, Janes, no name, and Sisco frozen breaded chicken products; salted butter from Baxter and Saputo; Winkler’s breakfast sausage and turkey thighs; La Fernandière sausages; and McCain potato products.

CFIA said its food safety investigation into the Sifto salt recall is ongoing and additional products could still be recalled.
