The news comes the day after police issued a Canada-wide warrant for the 47-year-old’s arrest in connection with the death of 56-year-old Yuk-Ying Anita Mui.
Mui, a prominent real estate agent in the community, was reported missing by her family Aug. 9, police said in a news release. She was last seen by family at 9:30 a.m. that day and had not been heard from since 11 a.m.

Police found her white 2024 Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle later that day in the area of Finch Avenue East and Warden Avenue in Toronto.

Ontario Provincial Police officers discovered human remains Aug. 12 near Parry Sound, a town located more than two hours north of Toronto, the release said. Charred remains were found just off of Highway 400 near Avro Arrow Road. The Office of the Chief Coroner has since identified the deceased as Mui.

Police have yet to give details on the connection between Hu and Mui, but an Aug. 22 press release said investigators believe Mui’s murder to be “a targeted incident.”

Three youths have also been charged in connection with Mui’s disappearance after police discovered them to be in possession of Mui’s property.

A 17-year-old male from Whitby faces a litany of weapons-related charges as well as two counts of fraud under $5,000.

Two male teens from Toronto, a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old have also been charged. The 17-year-old faces three counts of fraud under $5,000 while the 16-year-old faces one charge of fraud under $5,000, failing to comply with a release order, and failing to comply with probation.

Two vehicles connected to Hu have been seized by police, including a white 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. Police said they believe Mui was transported in the vehicle and are looking for anyone with video evidence of the van.

The second vehicle was a grey 2021 Porsche Cayenne SUV. Investigators said the SUV may have had a different licence plate on Aug. 9 or in the days leading up to that date.

The latest news in Mui’s murder comes after the YRP released its yearly statistics that saw a 92 percent increase in gun crime from August 2023.

Police also noted there have been 15 murders in the York Region in 2024, with five of those taking place since July 25.
