The Toronto police have arrested a suspect involved in the killing of a woman in the city’s downtown area on Friday morning.

The police said in a Twitter statement that officers arrived at the area near Yonge Street and King Street at around 11:40 a.m. on Jan. 20, in response to reports of a male assaulting a female.

The suspect, who was described as around 40 years old, with red hair braided at the back, a beard, and a thin build, was arrested at about 2 p.m., according to an update statement from the Toronto police.
Toronto police Insp. Craig Young said at a press conference that the suspect pushed the woman, who was at least 70 years old, reported Toronto Star. The woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The police said the suspect fled the scene after the assault, but was later arrested near Yonge Street and Richmond Street.

Young said police are waiting for the result of an autopsy before investigating the incident as a homicide, and that the suspect currently faces a charge of aggravated assault.
