The West Edmonton Mall was temporarily placed under lockdown due to a gun sighting on Dec. 2.

“On Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023, at approximately 2:30 p.m., West Branch officers responded to a weapons complaint at West Edmonton Mall where reportedly a male was observed with a gun,” Edmonton Police Service told The Epoch Times in an email.

“Officers arrived on scene and the mall was placed on lockdown as the parties involved in the weapons complaint were located and taken into custody.”

The mall said on social media at 3:41 p.m. local time that shoppers should remain in the “closest secure location until the lockdown has been lifted.”

The mall later said at 4:05 p.m. local time that the lockdown has been lifted.

“The emergency situation has now been resolved,” West Edmonton Mall said on X.

Police said there were no shots fired, adding that they have charged one individual in relation to the incident.

“The lockdown at the mall has since been lifted, and there is no threat to the public,” police said.

“There were no shots fired and nobody was injured. Charges are pending against a male in relation to the incident.”

The city’s flagship mall underwent another lockdown in August after multiple gunshots were reported to police.

The August incident resulted in three people being injured. Police said the shootings were targeted.
