Canada’s foreign affairs minister will be in Lima, Peru this week, to take part in the 52nd regular session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States.
Melanie Joly is expected to meet with her hemispheric counterparts and highlight the importance of working together on a long list of priority issues.
These include democracy and human rights in the region, international security, Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and its global consequences, and sustainable development.
Joly is scheduled to deliver Canada’s first in-person national statement at the OAS since 2019, due to the pandemic.
She will also lead a roundtable discussion on how best to help Haiti recover from its many challenges and reaffirm Canada’s commitment to developing a more stable, democratic and prosperous future for the Caribbean country.
The OAS summit runs today, through to Oct. 6.
