Australian golf legend Greg Norman will join the organising board as an independent director for the Brisbane Olympic Games, set to be held in 2032.

This role marks an exciting chapter for the Games, which will run from July 23 to Aug. 8, 2032, making it the third time Australia will host the event after Sydney 2000 and Melbourne 1956.

Norman reflected on his connection to Queensland, and in the northern suburbs of Brisbane where he learned to play golf.

“In my youth in the 70s, I worked in the golf shop at Royal Queensland, and now that course will be the home of golf at Brisbane 2032,” he said.

“We will prove our credentials as world leaders in events, sport, and hospitality at Brisbane 2032, and create an incredible legacy for this state. I look forward to working alongside the other committee members of OCOG in achieving our goals.”

Norman is Australia’s most successful golfer in history, having been a two-time British Open Champion, and holding the world number-one ranking for 331 weeks. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001.

He has also worked with U.S. President Donald Trump on events like the LIV Golf tournament, and has praised the Trump presidency as a “breath of fresh air.”

Sports Minister Anika Wells emphasised Norman’s unique understanding of Queensland’s sporting culture.

“As a proud Queenslander, [he] understands our State’s sporting pride and is a passionate supporter of the Olympic and Paralympic movements,” she said.

“Mr Norman is synonymous with Australian sporting success on the world stage and I look forward to drawing on his 40 years of global sporting experience and business acumen.”

Norman takes over from Federal Moreton MP Graham Perrett, who is set to retire from politics at the next election.

Andrew Liveris, the president of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee, said Norman would help put the state and city on a global map over the next seven years.

“I am absolutely delighted. What better Australian sports brand is there than Greg Norman? What better Queensland sports brand than Greg Norman?” he said.

In addition to his golfing success, Norman is also a successful businessman, working across real estate, golf course design, events, and hospitality ventures.
