Heavy snow earlier in the week is expected to turn into freezing rain on Jan. 19 in parts of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon.
All public schools in the Fraser Valley remain shut for a third day after Wednesday’s snowstorm, although most Metro Vancouver schools are open, with the exception of those in Langley.
Environment Canada says the freezing rain could last into the afternoon and potentially later in some areas.
BC Hydro’s outage map shows more than 20,000 customers in the province’s southwest without power as of 9 a.m., mostly in the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island.
Environment Canada says a winter storm warning remains in effect for inland parts of Vancouver Island, and snowfall, wind and freezing rain warnings are in place along B.C.’s north and central coasts.
The Jan. 17 storm dumped heavy snow on much of southern B.C., including 28 centimetres on Vancouver in the city’s biggest one-day snowfall since 1996.
Most of Alberta and parts of western Saskatchewan were covered by an extreme cold warning overnight though temperatures are forecast to moderate in the afternoon.
Much of the island of Newfoundland continues to be under snow squall warnings, with up to 50 centimetres potentially falling in some areas.
