U.S. political commentator Tucker Carlson is set to visit Calgary and interview Premier Danielle Smith.

Ms. Smith’s office confirmed in an email to The Epoch Times that she will be onstage for a question-and-answer session with Mr. Carlson during his show at the Calgary TELUS Convention Centre on Jan. 24.

“The Premier participates in a variety of public and private events and does interviews with dozens of reporters, broadcasters, and podcasters from across the political spectrum,” Ms. Smith’s press secretary said.

“Obviously, she does not subscribe to every view of every interviewer or reporter she speaks with whether that’s the CBC, the Toronto Star, or Tucker Carlson,” Sam Blackett said in the email. “The Premier aims to share Alberta’s message with as many people as possible whether they’re from Alberta, Canada, or around the world.”

The event will feature a speech by Mr. Carlson, and he will also interview businessman W. Brett Wilson.

NDP Leader Rachel Notley criticized Ms. Smith’s decision to appear with Mr. Carlson.

“By appearing on stage beside a person with such hateful, harmful views, Smith shows a total disregard for the negative consequences this will have on Alberta’s reputation, and casts severe doubt on her own,” Ms. Notley posted on X. The NDP leader didn’t elaborate as to which views she was referring to.

The Epoch Times reached out to Mr. Carlson and the convention centre but did not immediately hear back.

Mr. Carlson gained fame as a host on Fox News, but the network parted ways with him in April. He now hosts a new show on social media called “Tucker on X.”

Mr. Carlson, who was one of the most popular hosts on Fox News, occasionally targets Canada and its federal Liberal government on his show and was a vocal supporter of last year’s Freedom Convoy movement.

In May, he was named the most popular individual Americans follow for news in a survey by Gallup. In the same month, an analysis by Mediaite showed that Fox News saw a decline of 1 million viewers for its primetime lineup after Mr. Carlson’s departure.

“Americans follow their favorite public individual for news and information because they like their personality (80 percent) and trust the individual (79 percent),” according to Gallup. “More than seven in 10 Americans also say they turn to their top public individual for ‘a perspective I can’t find in traditional news outlets.’ Being entertained also tops the list.”
