Nigel Farage praised U.S. President Donald Trump as the only world leader with the courage to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party, during a surprise speech at an Arizona election rally.
Farage, who was dubbed “Mr Brexit” by Trump in 2016, also praised the president’s resilience and courage.
He told the crowd in Goodyear, Arizona on Oct. 28 that Trump was “the only leader in the Western world with the real courage to stand up to the Chinese Communist Party.”
Farage has been increasingly critical of the ruling regime in China, as well as a long-time supporter of the president.
Echoing his own anti-globalist sentiments, Farage also said that Trump was the only leader “who has got the guts to stand up and fight for the nation-state, to fight for patriotism, to fight against globalism.”
Farage said that the establishment had “never forgiven” Trump for his election victory four years ago, and had spent four years trying to delegitimize him.
“Most human beings under that barrage would have given up,” said Farage.“ This is the single most resilient and bravest person I have ever met in my life.”
Trump earlier had appeared to refer Farage as “King of Europe” although he did not mention him by name.
Farage later indicated that he had not expected to be called up to give a speech.
Farage’s reference to Trump standing up to Beijing follows his own shift towards more strident criticism of the regime.
“I am the first to say that we all now need to spend more time on the moral outrages that are being perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party,” he wrote in an article in July. “It [is] a truly wicked regime which none of us—left or right—should ever trust.”
Writing in Newsweek, Farage described how he used to ignore the appeals of members of the Falun Gong spiritual movement when they appealed outside the European Parliament building where he worked.
But Farage described a change of heart on watching documentaries on the plight of Uighur Muslims and reading the “shocking findings” of the China Tribunal carried out under Sir Geoffrey Nice. That tribunal concluded that forced organ harvesting involving a very large number of prisoners of conscience has been practiced for a substantial period of time.
“And the group which has had this state-sponsored murder inflicted upon it? Falun Gong, whose followers spent all those years outside my window in Strasbourg.”
