The shooting death of an Edmonton security guard in a downtown apartment building early Friday morning has resulted in two suspects facing murder charges.

Harshandeep Singh, 20, who was patrolling the apartment complex in the Central McDougall neighbourhood, was found unresponsive in a stairwell when officers responded to a report of a gunshot at the building around 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 6, the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said in a press release on Dec. 7.

The officers immediately performed first aid. Emergency Services also responded to the call. Paramedics treated Singh when they arrived and took him to the hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Two suspects were arrested late that afternoon. Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux, both 30, have been charged with a first-degree murder in connection with the shooting, the EPS press release said. A weapon was also seized during the arrest.

The police say they don’t believe anyone else was involved. They added that Singh’s name was released in order to help facilitate investigation and to assuage public concerns for safety.

“The EPS doesn’t typically release the name of a deceased individual unless the death has been confirmed to be a homicide,” EPS homicide staff sargeant Rob Bilawey said. “However, in this instance, we are releasing his name for an investigative purpose and in an effort to alleviate public safety concerns in relation to Mr. Singh’s unfortunate death.”

An autopsy is schedule for Monday, Dec. 9.

Detectives are continuing to investigate what led up to the shooting. They ask anyone with information to contact EPS at 780-423-4567. Anonymous information can also be sent to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
