A teacher in Ghana, West Africa, is making headlines around the world after a photo of him in class went viral.
Owura Kwadwo Hottish, 33, is an information and communications technology teacher in a middle school. Where he works there are no computers, so instead he painstakingly draws the computer screen on the blackboard.
Hottish posted photos of himself in the middle of February showing him teaching his students how to use Microsoft Word. The photos spread like wildfire.
“Every subject is taught on the blackboard here,” he told NPR.
The viral photo also caught the attention of Microsoft.
“Teaching of ICT in Ghana’s school is very funny,” Hottish wrote, alongside his photos. “I love my students so have to do what will make them understand what [I] am teaching.”
Hottish has taught the computer class for six years already, he is currently teaching at the Betenase M/A Junior High School in Kumasi, according to NPR.
The school is located about 250 miles from Accra, the capital of Ghana. In college, Hottish studied computers at the Kumasi Technical University.
While he does have a computer at home, he can’t bring it because “the battery is too weak to send it to school,” NPR reported.
According to the Daily Mail, 14- and 15-year-old students are currently expected to write and pass a national exam that includes ICT as one of the subjects.
The passionate teacher told NPR via WhatsApp that if he could give his students one thing, it would be computers “so they can have a feel for it.”
