Addressing the audience at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, Home Secretary Suella Braverman pledged to prohibit sex offenders from altering their name or gender, aiming to enhance regulations regarding the sex offenders register.
Presently, registered sex offenders must inform local police within three days if they change their name, but some have exploited a loophole to avoid reporting to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Ms. Braverman said: “We will bring forward legislation to prevent registered sex offenders from changing their identities. We will work to strengthen background checks so that they can catch undisclosed changes of identity.”
‘Hurricane’ of Immigration Arriving
Ms. Braverman also used her speech to warn that a “hurricane” of immigration may be coming to Britain. She said: “The wind of change that carried my own parents across the globe in the 20th century was a mere gust compared to the hurricane that is coming.
“Because today the option of moving from a poorer country to a richer one is not just a dream for billions of people, it is an entirely realistic prospect.”
Emphasising her party’s commitment to representing the majority of the British population, Ms. Braverman asserted that the Conservative Party stands firmly with the law-abiding, hard-working majority, against the “privileged woke minority” who “wield influence out of proportion” owing to their “luxury beliefs.”
In her speech, she portrayed the Conservative Party as a sort of trade union, stating that it is the voice of the British people. Ms. Braverman highlighted dedication to fighting for a Britain where the people come first.
In a well-received ending to her speech, she said: “We stand with the many, the law-abiding, hard-working common-sense majority, against the few, the privileged woke minority with their luxury beliefs who wield influence out of proportion to their numbers.
Resonating With Two-Thirds of Voters
Speaking to The Epoch Times, Matt Goodwin, a professor of politics at the University of Kent, highlighted the alignment between Ms. Braverman’s views and those of the average voter, especially on topics like immigration and identity.Citing recent polling data, Mr. Goodwin claimed that Ms. Braverman’s stance resonates with a significant portion of the population. He pointed out that two-thirds of voters supported her assertion that immigration represents a significant challenge to the Western world’s existence.
Speaking via text, Mr. Goodwin said: “As the latest polling shows, on issues such as immigration and identity Suella Braverman is often much closer to the views of the average voter than her critics might like to think.
Braverman Heckled As ‘Transphobic’
A London Assembly member from the Tory party, Andrew Boff, was removed from Ms. Braverman’s speech, accusing her of promoting a “transphobic” stance.Mr. Boff was escorted out after interrupting Ms. Braverman’s speech and criticising her comments on “gender ideology.”
Ms. Braverman had earlier stated, “Trans women have no place in women’s wards or indeed any safe space relating to biological women.”
This statement coincided with Health Secretary Steve Barclay’s announcement that individuals be cared for in wards corresponding to their biological sex, and intimate care be provided by individuals of the same sex.
Ms. Braverman defended the proposal, emphasising, “This is about protecting women’s dignity and women’s safety and women’s privacy.”
Mr. Boff, however, expressed his disagreement, claiming Ms. Braverman’s remarks were damaging the party’s reputation on LGBT rights.
He criticised her for making the Conservative Party appear “transphobic and homophobic,” stating, “Our party has a proud record of standing up for LGBT+ rights, and she is destroying it.”
