The Winnipeg Police Service says it responded to Sunny Morning Road in the city’s northeast at around 6:50 p.m. for a call about a child being bitten by a coyote.
They learned a 15-year-old girl and her nine-year-old brother were walking in the Popko Crescent and Knowles Avenue area when they noticed the animal.
Police say the coyote began running towards them as they fled, and the boy was mauled.
An area resident chased the coyote away and the boy was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Police say that if a coyote approaches you, you should attempt to appear large and loud to deter it, a practice known as hazing.
Examples of hazing include raising a jacket or another piece of clothing above your head to appear larger and shouting, police say. A safety whistle is another option for creating noise.
Police say they’re working with conservation officers regarding the incident.
