Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made good on a bet he and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith had over the recent Stanley Cup hockey game.

The Edmonton Oilers won the NHL Western Conference finals against the Dallas Stars and are now facing the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Finals.

“Congrats to the [Edmonton Oilers] on winning the #WCF and Alberta Premier [Danielle Smith] on winning our bet,” Mr. Abbott said in a June 7 post on X. “As promised, this is best steak I’ve ever had. From Canada.”

“I lost a bet to the Alberta premier where I have to eat a steak from Alberta,” he said in a video attached to the social media post where the governor was sitting outside at a table, eating the meal.

“The best steak I’ve ever had from Canada. Must be from a cow raised in Texas,” he quipped.

Ms. Smith responded, saying “I hope you enjoyed that delicious Alberta beef. Thanks for being a great sport with our bet too!”

On May 21, Ms. Smith put out the challenge on social media as the Oilers prepared to meet the Stars in a playoff match.

“When the Oilers beat the Stars, you must eat the world’s best steak, an Alberta rib steak, on video and comment on just how amazing it is. If the Stars win, which is highly unlikely, I will do the same,” she said in a post on X.
The bet was similar to one that Ms. Smith made with B.C. Premier David Eby on May 3. She wagered that if the Oilers lost she would deliver a statement in the legislature written by Mr. Eby while wearing a Vancouver Canucks jersey. However, if the Oilers won, Mr. Eby was to deliver a speech she wrote in the legislature while wearing an Oilers jersey.
Mr. Eby fulfilled his end of the bargain by posting a video of himself on X in the Oilers jersey and reading a statement written by Ms. Smith.
“A bet’s a bet,” he said in the post.
“Yes Oilers, you’re Canada’s team now,” Mr. Eby said in the video. “Go get ’em. We hope you win. Bring the Stanley Cup home to Canada.”
The Oilers and Panthers have seven games left to decide who takes home the trophy, the first of which will be on June 8 in Florida.
