LONGUEUIL, Que.—Police say a man was arrested in connection with threats against the mayor of Longueuil and other local elected officials over a plan to cull white−tailed deer in a city park.
Longueuil police say a man in his 20s from outside the city just south of Montreal was arrested on Tuesday and was released under conditions.
In recent days, threats have been made against Longueuil Mayor Sylvie Parent and others over a plan to capture and kill about half the roughly 30 white−tailed deer in Michel−Chartrand Park.
The plan has been met with fierce opposition, including an online petition and a protest on Saturday.
Police say some of the discourse degenerated, and last week they said one threat had been deemed sufficiently serious to warrant a police investigation.
Longueuil police say in a statement today they are investigating two other cases of alleged threats linked to the deer cull and they remind citizens that any type of threat—over the phone, in writing or on social media—can lead to criminal charges.
