Anthony Albanese will meet with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida for high-level talks less than two weeks after his visit to China.

The prime minister has joined world leaders in San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

He will hold talks with the Japanese prime minister on Nov. 18 morning AEDT.

The meeting with one of Australia’s key partners comes after Mr. Albanese became the first prime minister in seven years to set foot on Chinese soil earlier this month.

Beijing has stated it views ascension to the 12-nation Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership trade bloc as essential to deepening ties with Australia.

The Albanese government has left the door open to China’s bid, and won’t block the application.

But for a new country to sign up to the trade agreement, member states must give unanimous support.

Japan, a member of the trans-Pacific trade bloc, is strongly opposed to Beijing’s entry.

Mr. Albanese met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the summit on Nov. 17.

Mr. Albanese will also meet with Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong on Nov. 18, before he attends the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting.

Mr. Albanese will fly out of the U.S. that same day.
