The Alberta RCMP in Strathcona County has confirmed that an on-duty officer died in an automobile crash overnight, while en route to a call to assist other officers with a noise complaint.

At a news conference on April 10, the RCMP said Constable Harvinder Singh Dhami, known by his colleagues as Harvey, collided with a large concrete barrier at approximately 2 a.m. local time that day, east of Edmonton and the North Saskatchewan River.

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki said, “Despite efforts of emergency personnel and civilians on scene, Harvey succumbed to his injuries.”

The 32-year-old officer had been posted to Strathcona RCMP since he graduated from the RCMP training program in 2019. He leaves behind his wife, mother, sister, and brother.

Zablocki said Dhami “took great pride in wearing the uniform.”

“Harvey was known as someone who was mature with a strong sense of responsibility. He was hardworking, dependable, and so well-liked by everyone around him,” he added.

Dale Kendall, the detachment’s commanding officer, said Dhami was hardworking and composed. She said he was a “go-getter that could always be counted on.”

“He also never shied away from taking calls and always wanted to learn on the job. No matter what the task or risk might be,” Kendall said. She added that the officer would be remembered for his positive attitude and “great sense of humour.”

“He was one of the most professional people I’ve ever met,” she said.

Police said that funeral and procession details will be shared with the public in the days ahead.
