Summer fishing is a favourite pastime for Canadians who want to get out on the water and enjoy nature.

Statistics Canada says that about one in 10 Canadians fished close to home in 2021, a number that is comparable to those who bird-watch or camp near their homes.
For those looking for a fishing adventure this year, here are six of the best fishing spots in Manitoba.

Whiteshell Provincial Park

With various rivers and deep lakes in the area, Whiteshell Provincial Park in southeast Manitoba about 120 kilometres east of Winnipeg is an ideal stop for anglers. Open year-round, it’s considered one of the province’s best outdoor playgrounds. Any of the park’s 200 lakes is sure to turn up one of the top fish species, including big northern pike, bass, walleye, and lake trout.

Riding Mountain National Park

With over 1,900 lakes, Riding Mountain National Park in western Manitoba offers plenty of opportunities for recreational fishing. The park welcomes visitors for backcountry fishing and fly fishing. Some of the species in the area include northern pike, walleye, and brook trout.

Lac du Bonnet

Considered one of the most popular destinations for sport and pro fishing, Lac du Bonnet County is 115 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg on the west shore of the Winnipeg River. Fishing is allowed from the town pier, Winnipeg River Bridge, and a dike along Highway 11. Visitors can also use boats on the waterways in the area. Fish species include walleye, northern pike, goldeye, perch, bass, and channel catfish. The area hosts fishing derbies including the Lac du Bonnet fishing derby, walleye classic fishing derby, youth derby, and the Blue Bombers Fish Derby.

Lynn Lake

Located on the Manitoba–Saskatchewan border, Lynn Lake offers a variety of fish species for new and experienced anglers. Visitors are invited to bring their own boat and fishing equipment or rent it on site. Local fishing guides are available to help discover the big ones hiding in the many area lakes. Anglers can catch some of the best northern pike, walleye, and various trout species in the area. The Great Northern Pike Fishing Derby is held each summer for those looking for a little competition.

Snow Lake

Snow Lake in southwest Manitoba has numerous lakes in the area for fishing. Anglers can try catching walleye, northern pike, lake trout, and rainbow trout.

Roblin

Several lakes are stocked each year in Roblin, 400 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg and known as the fly-fishing capital of Manitoba. Thousands travel to the area each year in search of the many fish species available, including rainbow and brown trout, char, bass, carp, perch, pike, and walleye.
