Top White House lawyer Bob Bauer will step down at the end of June to return to private practice, and to focus on President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign, the White House announced on Thursday.
“Bob is a good friend and has served as a trusted adviser for many years,” said Obama in a statement. “Bob was a critical member of the White House team. He has exceptional judgment, wisdom, and intellect, and he will continue to be one of my close advisers.”
Once back to law firm Perkins Cole, the Harvard graduate will focus on serving as general counsel to Obama’s campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and as Obama’s personal lawyer.
Bauer, who assumed his post in January 2010, will be replaced by his deputy Kathryn Ruemmler.
“Kathy is an outstanding lawyer with impeccable judgment,” said Obama. “Together, Bob and Kathy have led the White House Counsel’s office, and Kathy will assure that it continues to successfully manage its wide variety of responsibilities.”
