Nearly everyone is familiar with the popular kid’s book “Where’s Waldo.” Each page is filled with faces plastered everywhere and you try to find the hidden picture of Waldo.
Now, let’s play “Find the congressman or woman.”
I’m referring to the big vote recently to spend and tax $750 billion on top of the normal hyper-inflated $6 trillion federal budget. All we’ve heard from the media pundits is that the Democrats have practically saved the planet from annihilation by passing the “historic climate change, health care, and energy bill.”
Sure. The temperature is falling already.
But, if this bill was so historic, where was everyone?
This would be like a baseball star not showing up for the World Series.
There were also some 70 Republicans who voted against the massive tax-and-spend bill by proxy. That’s not something I can defend. But there’s a big difference between failing to show up to vote “no,” and failing to show up to vote “yes” to make major changes to the laws of the land.
The House rules on proxy voting changed during COVID, but COVID is over. You can be sure there weren’t anywhere near 80 House Democrats (or 78 Rs) with the virus. Proxy voting is supposed to be for extraordinary circumstances.
Where were the members of Congress? We need to know. Were they at campaign fundraisers? Were they at a kid’s soccer game? Were they meeting with lobbyists?
Remote working has now morphed into remote legislating. So much for Congress being a deliberative body. I would guess that close to zero members even bothered to read the near-1,000-page bill. One congressman ran onto the House floor in shorts and a t-shirt to vote. Sorry to interrupt your tennis game, congressman.
Is it that much of a burden for a member of Congress to show up for work? If it is, maybe they should find another line of work.
This all strikes me as a clear violation of a representative’s moral duty to show up for votes on vital issues and know the details of what they’re voting into law. In Congress these days with the hyper-partisan divisions, it’s simply “Follow the leader.”
Do these members have guilty consciences that they just voted to bring the total amount of new Biden spending to close to $4 trillion? Are they at all ashamed that they’re going to sic 87,000 new IRS agents on middle-class Americans? The Dems in the House and Senate acted as if they were Chinese soldiers marching in dutiful lockstep—right over the cliff.
Here is the list of the 80 Democrats who voted “yes” by proxy, in the hopes that the people in these districts back home take note.
