Waterloo Regional Police (WRPS) were at the University of Waterloo (UWaterloo) at approximately 4 p.m. local time after receiving reports of multiple people stabbed in an incident.

In a tweet on June 28, police said there would be “an increased police presence in the area.”
A short time later, WRPS announced on social media that they had taken one individual into police custody, and three victims were transported to hospital. It is not known if those stabbed were students or faculty at the university.
Photos on social media show a large police presence and paramedics outside the University late in the afternoon.

In a series of tweets, UWaterloo said they were supporting the police in their investigation, and assured the public “there is no further risk to our campus community.

The university advised students and faculty in Hagey Hall to vacate the building immediately and leave all doors open. At approximately 5:30 p.m. local time, university officials issued an update, stating that any classes scheduled in Hagey Hall for the evening of June 28 were cancelled.

“All other campus operations will proceed as usual,” said the university.

Brad Hickey, a constable with the WRPS, told The Epoch Times that police are very early in the investigation and will release more details as they become available.

“We can confirm at this point that three victims were stabbed while inside Hagey Hall at the University of Waterloo,” said Hickey.

The officer said all three victims have been transported to hospital with physical injuries.

“The extent of the injuries are unknown at this time. One individual has been taken into police custody,” said the constable.

“Expect an increased police presence on campus as officers continue to clear buildings and ensure public safety,” he added.
