People who crossed the border from Ukraine gathered at a carpark on the outskirts of the Polish city of Przemysl on Wednesday after fleeing Russia’s invasion.
People received food and hot drinks before taking offers of transport elsewhere in Poland or to other countries.
The United Nations has estimated that more than 870,000 people have now fled Ukraine since the invasion began. The UN Refugee Agency has warned it looks set to become Europe’s largest refugee crisis this century and displace millions.
Most refugees have crossed into the European Union—membership of which Ukraine aspires to—in eastern Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and northern Romania. Authorities have pitched tents to provide medical aid and process asylum papers.
