Vaccine Supersite Pushes Out Drive-Thru Prom Event at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds

Prom on Wheels has been cancelled, largely due to the recent opening of a vaccination super point of distribution (POD) at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa.

The mile-long, outdoor drive-thru celebration, hosted by First Class Events, was to begin April 15 and run through June 4. The event was intended to give high school seniors, as well as the class of 2020, a prom-like experience.

However, the multimillion-dollar production was called off as COVID-restrictions eased—making in-person prom feasible for schools—and with the opening of a vaccination site in the event’s stead.

“There were several factors [for the cancellation],” Holly Keaton told The Epoch Times April 14.

“One primary factor is that the fairgrounds have been declared a COVID vaccination supersite. They basically took over the grounds in their entirety.”

Orange County opened its latest super POD at the Orange County Fair and Event Center on March 31, just as the county reached the Orange tier.

First Class Events returned its reserved space to enable the super POD’s vaccination efforts.

As everyone aged 16 and up became eligible for the vaccine April 15, many high schools are optimistic about holding in-person proms.

Schools and districts that reserved tickets for Prom on Wheels will be refunded.
