Woman’s Body Discovered in Suitcase Alongside Road in Affluent Connecticut Town, Said Police

The body of a young woman was found inside a red suitcase left on a road in a Connecticut town on Feb. 5, said police.

The Greenwich Police Department said workers found the body around 10 and 15 feet off Glenville Road in Greenwich, according to the Greenwich Time newspaper.

Police said they believe the woman is between 18 and 30 years old. They added that they have information that could help identify the woman.

The case is being investigated as a homicide.

“There was no doubt homicide was involved,” Cap. Robert Berry of the Greenwich Police Department was quoted by the newspaper as saying. “We do not know the manner or cause of death at this time.”

Berry said it was not clear when the killing took place, and officials said she was killed in another location before she was moved to the roadside.

Residents said they were stunned by the find.

“It’s unnerving and a little scary, but hopefully they are good at their job and will get things done,” Anthony Zaccagnino, who works nearby, told NBC New York.

“I open up at 6 o‘clock in the morning, by 8 o’clock, I see cop cars going by. Customers came down and said somebody found a body in a suitcase at the top of the hill,” he added.

“I feel like this neighborhood is relatively safe, so it’s a surprise. Finding a body near where you live, it’s concerning,” Liza Scullin, a resident in the area, told the Time.

“It’s so sad, so tragic,” said Susan Whitman, NBC reported. “I hope they get to the bottom of it.”

According to Bloomberg News, Greenwich is one of the wealthiest areas in the United States. The average adjusted gross income of the town’s zip code is about $626,200.

Officials are calling on anyone with information to call the Greenwich Police at 203-622-3333.

“We’re supposed to be the safest towns in America, or at least one of them,” said Melissa Klinka, a local, reported the Greenwich Time.

She added: “So something like this makes people uncomfortable.”

Berry said the department’s focus now “is positively identifying the victim and notifying the next of kin. We are sensitive to the fact that the victim is member of someone’s family and our thoughts are with those impacted by this tragedy. The Greenwich Police Department is committed to identifying those responsible for this homicide,” Patch.com reported.

Violent Crime in the US

The number of murders and violent crimes committed in the United States dropped slightly in 2017, according to new crime statistics released in September 2018.

“Crime declined nationwide last year, consistent with our earlier analyses of 2017 data in the nation’s 30 largest cities,” Ames Grawert, senior counsel for the Justice Program at the Brennan Center for Justice in New York, told the Washington Times.

“That’s the good news. The bad news is that even while crime is falling, the number of Americans incarcerated remains near-record highs. Now is the time to address the problem.”

The number of cases of manslaughter and murder dropped 0.7 percent in 2017 from the prior year, the report said.

Rapes rose by 3 percent and aggravated assault rose by 1 percent, but overall violent crimes dropped 0.2 percent, the report added.
