A faith-based pregnancy center just blocks from the U.S. Capitol was vandalized with red paint and eggs, and spray-painted with the words “JANE SAYS” and “REVENGE,” sometime between late Thursday night and Friday morning.
Washington Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers responded Friday morning to reports of damaged property at the Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center—a faith-based non-profit organization offering free assistance to mostly financially-disadvantaged families who are dealing with crisis pregnancies.
Damage included red paint all over the front door, windows splattered with eggs, and graffiti on the walls.
“This type of intimidation is beneath us as a nation,” Durig told the outlet.
According to Durig, the MPD did a “phenomenal job” and sent a team to clean up after evidence was collected.
Emotions are running high after a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that could overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark ruling guaranteeing the right to abortion across the United States.
The spray-painted name “JANE” could refer to Jane Roe, the fictional name used in the Texas lawsuit that eventually led to the Supreme Court decision.
Although the clinic had security cameras covering the premises, the devices were reportedly not working.
The investigation into the Capitol Hill Pregnancy Center vandalism is ongoing.
The faith-based center provides “intervention and abortion alternatives for women,” and encourages lifestyles “that reflect godly values, especially with regard to sexual behavior,” according to its website.
Next Step Pregnancy Center in Lynnwood, Washington was vandalized in the early hours of May 25. Five front windows were smashed, and footage shared by a local radio host shows a lone person dressed in black, spray-painting the slogans “Jane’s revenge” and “If abortions aren’t safe, you aren’t either.”
