Video Shows Suspects Placing Credit Card Skimmers on Store Machine

Credit card skimmers are becoming increasingly common across the United States, and as this video from Miami Beach shows, it’s apparently not hard to place one of the devices on a credit card machine or ATM.

Miami Beach police are searching for two men who they believed distracted a gas station employee on Wednesday so they could place the device on a keypad next to the register, Local10 reported.

The video footage shows the men speaking with the cashier before the incident goes down.

“They speak with the cashier, they have some sort of exchange, it appears as though one actually sends her to the other end of the register, I would imagine, to purchase something,” said Miami Beach Officer Ernesto Rodriguez, according to WSVN-TV.

The incident took place at 9:30 p.m. at a Chevron Gas Station at 1453 Alton Road. The gas station clerk doesn’t know the skimmer was placed on the machine.

Customers were stunned when they found out about it.

“You probably see it more often than not, again, in these areas,” said customer Andre Colorado. “It’s just a lot of tourists, a lot of people at the same time and then everybody’s not really looking for that.”

Rodriguez said police are calling on people to use EMV-chipped cards whenever possible.

Meanwhile, the suspects have not been arrested.

“Thankfully, this business has a great surveillance video that clearly depicts who these individuals are. Now we just need the public’s help in identifying them,” said Rodriguez.
