The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a public health alert for Wegmen’s frozen chicken nuggets over possible contamination with bone fragments.

The product should not be consumed and must be thrown away, the agency said. It can also be returned to stores.

The public health alert was issued after the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) received “multiple complaints of bone fragments” in the product.

“There have been no confirmed reports of injury due to consumption of these products,” the USDA said, but also urged concerned consumers to contact a health care provider.

A recall was not issued because the product has been pulled from store shelves and is no longer available for purchase. Public health alerts are usually issued by the USDA to inform the public about potential health risks when a recall isn’t recommended, the USDA says.

The fully-cooked, frozen, breaded chicken nuggets were produced on Aug. 6, 2024, solely for Wegmen’s Food Markets, according to the USDA. The item was distributed to stores in Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The 46-ounce plastic packages have a “best if used by” date of Aug. 26, 2025, which is located on the back of the packaging next to the barcode in the lower right corner.

Wegman’s issued its own voluntary recall over “possible bone pieces” in the item. According to its website, two other items were also recalled this month, including a peach sorbet and dry-roasted almonds.

NTD reached out to Wegman’s for a statement but did not immediately receive a response.
