Former President Donald Trump said Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is focusing on alleged 2020 election interference instead of what he described as a surging homicide rate in Atlanta.
There have been reports indicating that Ms. Willis’s office may charge the former president and his allies regarding alleged attempts to overturn the state’s election results in 2020 this week. Her office has not made any public announcements about the case.
Her office, he wrote, “should instead focus on the record number of murders in Atlanta!”
Anonymously sourced reports on Sunday claim that Ms. Willis’s evidence includes alleged text messages and emails that connected President Trump’s legal team to a 2021 voting system breach in Coffee County.
Mr. Duncan, a critic of the former president, didn’t respond to a request for more details from The Epoch Times when asked on Sunday.
Although Ms. Willis has been working on her case against President Trump for several years, it’s still not clear when charges will be brought. The district attorney told a local news outlet in July that she would make “big decisions” about the election probe before September.
“I made a commitment to the American people, but most importantly the citizens of Fulton County, that we’re going to make some big decisions regarding the election investigation and that I will do that before Sept. 1 of 2023. I’m going to hold true to that commitment,” she said. “The work is accomplished … we’re ready to go,” she added.
At the start of August, President Trump was indicted on federal charges for conspiring against the government in what prosecutors say was an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. It was the third time in about four months that the former commander-in-chief was charged in felony offenses, while he has categorically denied any wrongdoing and has instead accused prosecutors of engaging in politically motivated witch hunts against him.
Those latest charges stem from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into allegations President Trump sought to reverse his loss to Biden. But despite the growing list of legal problems, President Trump has solidified his status as the front-runner for the GOP presidential nomination, according to opinion polls, easily besting the rest of the fray, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
In a statement this month, the Trump campaign said he had always followed the law and characterized the indictment as a “persecution” reminiscent of Nazi Germany. “President Trump will not be deterred by disgraceful and unprecedented political targeting!” it added.
President Trump also pleaded not guilty after a federal grand jury in Miami convened by the special counsel charged him in June in a 37-count indictment over his alleged unlawful retention of classified government documents after leaving office in 2021 and obstructing justice.
In March, a grand jury convened by Manhattan’s district attorney indicted him for falsifying business records to hide payments before the 2016 election. President Trump pleaded not guilty.
