Attorney to President Donald Trump and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said on July 16 that the president confronted the “progressive” members of the Democratic party because Democrats are afraid to stand up to them.

“Since the Dems are afraid to stand up to AOC, Omar, Tlaib et al, hateful and ignorant criticism of our law enforcement and federal agents, and their support of economic destruction of our ally Israel. [Trump] has to do it for them. After all he is supposed to defend America,” Giuliani said in a Twitter post on July 16.

Giuliani’s defense for the president comes amid a fiery feud between Trump and four far-left members of the Democratic party—Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashia Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.).

Trump has accused the four freshman congresswomen of being anti-semitic and anti-American in a series of posts between July 14 and 16, where he most notably called on “‘progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen” to “go back” to their countries to help fix the “totally broken and crime infested places” before returning to the United States to “show us how it is done.”

“We will never be a Socialist or Communist Country. IF YOU ARE NOT HAPPY HERE, YOU CAN LEAVE! It is your choice, and your choice alone. This is about love for America. Certain people HATE our Country. They are anti-Israel, pro Al-Qaeda, and comment on the 9/11 attack, ‘some people did something,'” the president wrote in one of the posts on July 15, while defending his stance.

Many of Trump’s opponents denounced the comments, calling them racist. Moreover, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also weighed in, describing the remarks as “xenophobic” and accusing the president of “making America white again.”

Trump showed no signs of backing down when asked to respond to the criticism at the White House during an economic event on July 15.

“If you’re not happy here, then you can leave. As far as I’m concerned, if you hate our country, if you’re not happy here you can leave. And that’s what I say all the time,” Trump said.

“That’s what I said in a tweet that I guess some people think is controversial. A lot of people love it, by the way. A lot of people love it. But if you’re not happy in the U.S., if you’re complaining all the time, very simply you can leave. You can leave right now. Come back if you want, don’t come back, that’s ok too. But if you’re not happy, you can leave.”

He also provided some clarity as to which members he was referring to by directing specific criticism to Omar and Ocasio-Cortez during his remarks.

The four Congresswomen held a press conference on July 15 to denounce the president’s comments as well as criticize Trump.

Along with Giuliani, other prominent political commentators and figures came to the president’s defense.

“I honestly do not see how anyone who loves America can vote Democrat. This is NOT the party of JFK or even Obama. This is some lab experiment gone horribly wrong,” host of Your Voice America, Bill Mitchell said in a post.

Similarly, Charlie Kirk, founder and president of Turning Point USA, said reacting to the Democratic congresswomen’s comments.

“Only in America could you make a career behind the idea of destroying the country that gave you limitless opportunity, incredible freedom, safety, and the potential for prosperity and then play the victim when you called out for trying to deconstruct our country from within,” Kirk said in a Twitter post.

The president also noted on July 16 in a series of new Twitter posts that Democrats are “petrified” to rebuke the progressives in their party for “some of the most vile, hateful, and disgusting things ever said by a politician in the House or Senate.”

“The Democrat Congresswomen have been spewing some of the most vile, hateful, and disgusting things ever said by a politician in the House or Senate, & yet they get a free pass and a big embrace from the Democrat Party,” Trump said on Twitter.

“Horrible anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-terrorist & public shouting of the F…word, among many other terrible things, and the petrified Dems run for the hills.”
