Former President Donald Trump has accused Democrats of spreading “disinformation” about him after President Biden claimed the businessman forgot the name of his wife, Melania Trump.
“There’s never been anything like it. He’s also the worst president in the history of our country. He went on a very poorly rated show last night, and he talked about Donald Trump and his wife,” President Trump said.
The Republican 2024 White House candidate was referencing President Biden’s interview on the “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Feb. 26.
President Biden appeared to be referencing President Trump’s comments during the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) just days earlier.
He later looked off-stage and said, “Oh look at that. Mercedes, that’s pretty good!”
Many mainstream media outlets quickly began reporting that President Trump had mistaken his wife’s name and called her “Mercedes” instead of Melania.
Biden’s Claims Incorrect: Trump
In his post on Truth Social, President Trump stressed that he had been addressing Ms. Schlapp, and not referencing his wife, Melania, during his CPAC appearance. Ms. Schlapp’s husband, Matt Schlapp, chairs the American Conservative Union, which hosts CPAC.President Trump said, “I made the statement that Melania was very popular because when I mentioned her name, the audience went wild. I then looked at the two people, man and wife, Matt and Mercedes Schlapp. And I said, Wow, they really liked the first lady. So this got taken as the fact that I thought Mercedes was the first lady. It has nothing to do with that.”
The former president added, “These people are really dishonest. They are absolutely something. They have a horrible candidate who is a horrible president. They make up things constantly.”
He went on to accuse Democrats of repeatedly attempting to question his mental acuity over what he said were comments or actions he made that were done “purposely for comedic reasons and for sarcasm.”
“The disinformation of the Democrats is unbelievable. They do it because they have a horrible candidate ... He should not be leading this country ... Hopefully, on November 5th, he’s not going to be. We’re gonna have a big election. We’re gonna have a big victory, and we’re gonna make America great again. Thank you,” President Trump concluded.
