Traffic flow along 2.5 miles of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard is expected to improve with the help of a grant for a signal synchronization project, Marin County Department of Public Works officials said on Sept. 18.

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission selected the city of Larkspur, Caltrans and Marin County for an $83,575 grant to improve the traffic signal timing along the busy boulevard between Larkspur and Kentfield.

The commission will administer and manage the grant for the recipients that have jurisdiction over different sections of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

Nine of the 11 traffic signals within the 2.5-mile stretch are under county jurisdiction, and Larkspur has jurisdiction over two signal lights.

Caltrans will review a traffic study that analyzes two of its signals near U.S. Highway 101 access ramps and might make signal-timing changes.

The grant project is expected to begin in April 2019 and be completed in June.

The Program for Arterial System Synchronization grant will cover 85 percent of the retiming work and half of GPS clock infrastructure improvements. The total cost of the project is $98,900.

Marin County and Larkspur will provide $12,539 and $2,786 in funding based on the number of signals in their jurisdiction.
