A local police officer fired shots at the gunman who opened fire at former President Donald Trump on Saturday, a local law enforcement official disclosed Wednesday, also saying that the Secret Service was told by local police officials that they lacked the manpower to secure a building where the suspect was perched.

Richard Goldinger, the district attorney in Butler County, Pennsylvania, told the New York Times in an exclusive interview that a local officer in Butler shot at the gunman, who the FBI identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks. That officer, Mr. Goldinger said, did not fire the kill shot and he added that he did not know if the officer struck Mr. Crooks with gunfire.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has confirmed that an agency counter sniper killed Mr. Crooks, after firing shots at the former president, striking him in the right ear.

Former President Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump confirmed that his stepmother, former First Lady Melania Trump, as well as his sister Ivanka Trump, will appear at the Republican National Convention (RNC) this week.

“They’re coming in full force and effect, so they’ll certainly be here,” Eric Trump told CBS News on Wednesday morning, responding to a question about whether his sister and the former first lady would attend.

“Ivanka’s been an incredible supporter of my father. I think you know that; she’s been in the White House for a ... four-year period of time and loves him dearly,” said the younger Trump, whose is married to Lara Trump, the co-chair of the Republican National Committee.

MILWAUKEE—Former President Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), bridges the chasm between dirt-poor Appalachian families and Ivy League, Silicon Valley, and political circles.

While some GOP voters and leaders had favored a female, black, or Hispanic VP to project an image of diversity, others say Mr. Vance fits the bill in another way.

Mr. Vance “already does ‘check a box’ that people kind of overlook ... socioeconomic diversity,” Marc Clauson, professor of history and law at Ohio’s Cedarville University, told The Epoch Times on July 16, a day after the former president announced his running mate.

The director of the Secret Service said the agency is responsible for the security plan at the Pennsylvania rally where a shooter fired upon former President Donald Trump.

“At that particular site, we divided up areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is totally responsible for the design and implementation and the execution of the site,” Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle told CNN on Tuesday night.

Her comments were made amid questions surrounding the agency’s performance in securing the rally site on Saturday as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a rooftop about 400 feet away from the former president, striking him in the ear as well as killing one and injuring two others. Secret Service snipers shot and killed Mr. Crooks soon after he fired on the rally.
