Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) is spearheading a resolution with a group of GOP lawmakers to award former President Donald Trump a Congressional Gold Medal.

Ms. Luna introduced the resolution, named the “President Donald J. Trump Congressional Gold Medal Act,” on May 14. It calls for awarding the 45th president a gold medal for “his exceptional leadership and dedication to strengthening America’s diplomatic relations during his presidency” as he attends court proceedings in New York regarding his ongoing criminal case about alleged hush money payments.

Ms. Luna leads a group of GOP representatives in calling for the award: Republican Deputy Whip Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) and Reps. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), Mary Miller (R-Ill.), Bob Good (R-Va.), Randy Weber (R-Texas), Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), and Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.).

“President Trump’s successes in foreign policy during his first term are none other than historic. Whether it was the Abraham Accords or peace with North Korea, America was respected as a nation and a global power under his presidency,” Ms. Luna said in a statement to The Epoch Times.

“I am introducing this bill to recognize his strong leadership and critical role in making the world a safer place. His legacy for the American people should always be remembered.”

According to the resolution, “President Trump’s time in office ushered in profound changes to United States diplomatic relations with countries around the world.”

It argues that President Trump “made history” when he met with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un on Nov. 8, 2016, and that he “worked to resume stalled nuclear talks and expressed hope for peace between North and South Korea” by facilitating a meeting between the two countries’ leaders.

The resolution also cites President Trump hosting the signing of the Abraham Accords in September 2020, “establish[ing] historic diplomatic relations between Israel and its neighbors in the Middle East.”

“The Abraham Accords consisted of a general declaration that recognized the importance of maintaining and strengthening peace in the Middle East,” the resolution adds, and “was signed alongside bilateral agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco to normalize relations between the countries.”

“President Trump commemorated the Abraham Accords by welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al-Zayani, and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the United Arab Emirates Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyanisigns to the White House for the Abraham Accords Signing Ceremony.”

The resolution states that President Trump’s “greatest foreign policy achievement” was that “no wars were started while he was in office,” alluding to the Israel–Hamas war that the Hamas terrorist group triggered on Oct. 7, 2023, with its attacks against Israeli citizens and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

Ms. Luna’s resolution asks House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate President Pro Tempore Patty Murray (D-Wash.) to “make appropriate arrangements for the presentation, on behalf of the Congress, of a gold medal of appropriate design, to President Donald J. Trump.”

It also allows Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to “strike and sell duplicates in bronze of the gold medal” and that any “amounts received from the sale of duplicate bronze medals … shall be deposited into the United States Mint Public Enterprise Fund.”

Some other recent recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal include the Dalai Lama and professional golfer Jack Nicklaus.
