According to a press release, the committee is putting $250,000 into promoting the ad on television channels and social media platforms.
The ad shows Democratic leaders such as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) saying they “put country over party.”
“That’s just what Jeff Van Drew did,” a narrator says as the Congressman is shown. “Standing by President Trump rather than participate in a sham impeachment.”
“It takes guts to stand up for what’s right, even when the mob rises against you,” the narrator says, before asking people to call Van Drew and thank him for what he did.
“Anti-Trump Democrats have long claimed to put country before party, but only Van Drew has actually done so. Those who support President Trump thank Drew for seeing reason and tuning out the charade of an impeachment process that has gone on far too long. Drew will be a valuable ally for President Trump in the years to come, as he continues to make America great again,” Ted Harvey, chairman of The Committee to Defend the President, said in a statement.
During the meeting on Thursday, Trump praised Van Drew and told him he'd be endorsing him for re-election.
“He’s very smart because he knows it’s not going to be the minority for long. I have a feeling we’re going to do very well in 2020,” Trump said.
“I just want to tell you how grateful we are for your voice of reason and common sense in the days leading up to your decision. You showed personal and political courage. And I know the people of your district will be as grateful as we are today for your leadership and for the decision you’ve made,” Vice President Mike Pence added.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said that any other members of Congress who want to switch to the GOP would be welcomed.
“If there are other people out there that feel this new socialist-Democrat wing of the party has left them behind, join with us,” he said.
