A Portland resident whose brutal assault of another man during a protest in Oregon’s largest city over the summer was captured on camera was sentenced to 20 months in prison after pleading guilty.
Marquise Love, 26, pleaded guilty to assault in the third degree and felony riot, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced this week.
After serving the time, Love will be on probation for three years.
A resolution came about after months of pretrial negotiations and a judicial settlement conference, Schmidt’s office said. The victim, law enforcement, the court, and the state agreed the resolution was appropriate.
“The video of this assault is violent and shocking. It outraged our community and nation. We are fortunate that the victim’s injuries were not as severe as it first appeared they may have been,” Schmidt said in a statement.
“In the days, weeks and months after this assault, detectives with the Portland Police Bureau worked quickly to identify the suspect and complete the investigation. This is a proper resolution. Marquise Love is accepting responsibility for his actions and the punishment.”
Love surrendered to authorities on Aug. 21 and has been detained since then.
Love, a Black Lives Matter activist, appeared in court to be sentenced and expressed remorse while apologizing to the victim, Adam Haner.
Haner was not in court.
Haner told KATU-TV that he was not seeking vengeance and that karma will take care of Love, either through the justice system or in another way.
He suffered numerous injuries, including several broken ribs, a retina that may become detached, and lacerations on his head that required stitches.
