TORRANCE, Calif.—A month-old child died at a hospital after being bitten by a dog in Torrance, police said Wednesday.

Authorities went to the 2700 block of Martha Avenue about 12:35 p.m. Tuesday on “an animal bite call,” the Torrance Police Department said in a statement.

“The Torrance Fire Department arrived and discovered that a dog had [bitten] a one-month-old child,” the police statement said.

“Subsequently, the Torrance Fire Department ... transported the child to the hospital,” the police statement said. “Torrance Police officers responded to the hospital, contacted the parents, and learned that the child had passed away.”

Information on the identity of the child was not immediately released.

“City of Torrance Animal Control also responded and took possession of the dog,” police said. “As of now, the cause of death is undetermined, pending the Los Angeles County [Medical Examiner’s] investigation.”
