A preliminary investigation of the mass shooting in Kansas City, Missouri, has found no links to terrorism, police said.

“This appeared to be a dispute between several people that ended in gunfire,” Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves told reporters on Thursday morning.

The Feb. 14 shooting left a 43-year-old woman dead and 22 others wounded, including children, Ms. Graves said during the press conference. Initially, there were reports of 22 victims in total.

“During the overnight hours, we learned there are 23 victims of yesterday’s shootings,” Ms. Graves said. “One of our victims, Elizabeth Galvan, 43 years old, died. We are still learning about her, but know that she is beloved by many. To her friends and family, we are with you, and we are working tirelessly to investigate her murder.”

The shooting broke out at the end of a victory celebration for the Kansas City Chiefs, who won the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 11.

What Happened?

Gunfire erupted at about 2 p.m. near the parking garage of the city’s historic Union Station as fans were leaving the rally, according to officials.
Thousands of fans filled the parade route and cheered as the reigning Super Bowl champions passed by them on double-decker buses. All of the players, coaches, staffers, and their families “were safe and accounted for” after the shooting, the Kansas City Star reported.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who attended the event with his wife and mother, told reporters at a press conference on Wednesday that he ran for safety as shots rang out.
He said 600 Kansas City police officers, along with 250 officers from outside agencies, were on duty in and around Union Station at the time of the shooting.

What We Know About the Victims

Local radio DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, whose radio name was “Lisa G,” was shot and killed, radio station KKFI wrote on Facebook.

“It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, host of Taste of Tejano, lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs’ rally,” the post read. “Our hearts and prayers are with her family. We encourage anyone who feels they saw something to reach out to law enforcement at 816-234-5111. This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community.”

The disc jockey reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to her abdomen. She was transported to a hospital, where she died during surgery, the Kansas City Star reported.

Ms. Lopez-Galvan’s childhood friends, Rosa Izurieta and Martha Ramirez, described her as an extrovert and devoted mother of two from a prominent Latino family in the area.

Ms. Izurieta said Ms. Lopez-Galvan had attended the celebration with her husband and son, a die-hard Kansas City sports fan who was also shot.

In a separate social media post, the radio station said that along with Ms. Lopez-Galvan’s son, two other relatives were also victims in the shooting.

“We'd also like to let everyone know that her son Marc was shot in the leg but has been released from the hospital. Her cousin’s 2 daughters were also shot and are recovering at [Children’s Mercy Hospital]. Please keep this family and all of KC in your heart,” the radio station wrote.

Ms. Lopez-Galvan also played at weddings, quinceañeras, and an American Legion bar and grill. She mixed Tejano, Mexican, and Spanish music with R&B and hip-hop.

Ms. Izurieta and Ms. Ramirez said Ms. Lopez-Galvan’s family is active in the Latino community, and her father founded the city’s first mariachi group, Mariachi Mexico, in the 1980s.

During Thursday’s update, Ms. Graves said that the victims’ ages ranged between 8 and 47 years old.

“At least half of our victims are under the age of 16,” she said.

The condition and identity of all the victims have not been released.

Investigation Continues

Three people have been detained, “two of which are juveniles,” Ms. Graves told reporters on Thursday. They are still working to determine others who may have been involved.

“It should be noted we have recovered several firearms,” she continued. “This incident is still a very active investigation. We ask anyone in the vicinity of the shooting who directly witnessed the shooting incident, has any video of the shooting incident, or is a victim of the shooting and has not yet reported it to police: please call this dedicated line: 816-413-3477.”

During her update, Ms. Graves told reporters that some attendees “physically stopped” one of the persons believed to have been involved in the shooting.

“I want to thank the people involved who acted bravely yesterday alongside law enforcement [including] the Kansas City Fire Department,” Ms. Graves said. “Your selfless act did not go unnoticed. Thank you, Kansas City. I’m angered by what occurred in our city yesterday, but I’m also thankful for the response.”
