LONG BEACH, Calif.—Police on June 27 are investigating a string of armed robberies of Long Beach street vendors.

The robberies occurred on four occasions between March 24 and June 25 of last year near Cedar Avenue and Willow Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

“Detectives believe an unknown suspect approached a street vendor, demanded cash and fled the scene on a bike before the arrival of police officers,” the department reported. In three of the incidents, the suspect pointed a firearm at the victim. In one incident, he grabbed his waistband as if armed.

A description of the suspect was unavailable.

In response to the robberies, police said they increased their presence in the area to deter additional crime and to engage with the businesses and the community.

Officials suggested the following safety tips:
  • Be aware of your surroundings;
  • If you see a suspicious person, report it;
  • If you are the victim of a robbery, call 911 as soon as you can. Do not resist the suspect, and be a good witness. Note their appearance, attire and/or vehicle description.
