The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump set a bad precedent and could open “Pandora’s box” for the impeachment of Vice President Kamala Harris if Republicans gain a majority in the House, according to a top Republican senator.
“I don’t know how Kamala Harris doesn’t get impeached if the Republicans take over the House, because she actually bailed out rioters, and one of the rioters went back to the streets and broke somebody’s head open,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), referring to Harris’s tweeted support of the Minnesota Freedom Fund to bail out rioters and protesters who were arrested during the George Floyd demonstrations last year. It was not clear who allegedly “broke somebody’s head open.”
The Freedom Fund defended the move, saying that “we do not make determinations of bail support based on the crimes that individuals are alleged to have committed.”
Ultimately, the Senate acquitted Trump 57-43 on Feb. 13. Trump was impeached in the House for allegedly inciting violence during the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, with House Democrats claiming that he “incited an insurrection.” Trump and his lawyers denied the claims.
“The president is a handful and what happened [at the Capitol] on 6 January was terrible for the country,“ Graham said. ”But he’s not singularly to blame. Democrats have sat on the sidelines and watched the country being burned down for a year and a half and not said a damn word, and most Republicans are tired of the hypocrisy.”
