A deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD) fatally shot a man in a parking lot in Stanton, California, on Sept. 18 following a high-speed chase.
The short pursuit ended at approximately 5:20 p.m., after the deputy had attempted to pull the vehicle over, according to an OCSD press release. The vehicle had been reported stolen in Garden Grove earlier that day.
The deputy spotted and identified the vehicle near the corner of Beach Boulevard and Chapman Avenue at around 5:15 p.m while on routine patrol. After the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver in the vehicle failed to yield, leading to the high-speed pursuit, the press release stated.
The suspect was noted to be an Asian male in his 30s.
Sgt. Dennis Breckner of the OCSD told The Epoch Times that the pursuit ended when the suspect ultimately decided to pull into the parking lot of a senior living facility located at the corner of Dale and Cerritos avenues.
The shooting occurred at that time, though it’s unclear what transpired. Due to an ongoing investigation, Breckner said details regarding the shooting are currently being kept confidential.
“At some point, [the suspect’s identity] may come out, but at this point we will not be releasing it,” Breckner said.
However, he did confirm to The Epoch Times that a single deputy was on the scene when the shooting took place.
Deputies attempted to render medical aid to the suspect after he was shot, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the deputy-involved shooting will be taken on by the Orange County District Attorney’s office, as is protocol with all officer-involved shootings.
The Sheriff’s Department will also be conducting an administrative investigation into the matter.
