August 21

  • Berkeley announces that new outdoor activities like pools, barbers, and wine tasting will be allowed with restrictions.
  • Lake County’s Highland Springs Recreation Area and Mt. Konocti County Park and Regional Trails are closed until further notice due to high fire danger.
  • Both public and private Sacramento schools (TK–12) must use the distance learning model until further notice.
  • Sacramento will likely see smoke in the air through Aug. 25.
  • Santa Cruz County announces additional shelters for evacuees due to the fires. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter (SCCAS) will help with animal evacuations.
  • Contra Costa County is recruiting people to serve on the Airport Land Use Commission (ALUC).
  • The Corpse Flower in San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers will bloom again after three years. Visitors can check the schedule to view it.

August 20

  • The last I-880 Express Lanes sign installation will start Aug. 24 in Alameda County.
  • Residents living on the east side of Morgan Hill are asked to evacuate.

  • Santa Cruz County asks that tourists and visitors leave the county immediately to make space for those evacuating from fires.
  • There are evacuation centers for Santa Clara County residents at Milpitas Library and Morgan Hill.

  • U-Haul is offering 30 days of free self-storage for residents impacted by the fires near Vacaville.

August 19

  • Airbnb files for IPO.
  • The statewide Flex Alert is in effect from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • CalFire issues a red flag warning for Central Valley and Northeastern California.
  • The mayors of San Jose and San Diego release a statement to avoid an exodus of ride-share companies from California due to AB5.
  • Napa County releases updated wildfire mandatory evacuations.
  • Residents can check air quality with airnow.gov by zip code.
  • Several counties report poor air quality due to fires: Placer County and Contra Costa County as well as Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, and San Mateo Counties.

  • PG&E customers may check when their residence may have a rotating power outage.
  • Yolo County warns residents to beware of tax scams like a Tax Lien Letter.
  • Monterey County releases a resource for fire information and emergency notifications.
  • Santa Cruz County will put beach restrictions in place during the Labor Day holiday weekend.
  • Santa Clara County announces cooling center updates for Aug. 18–19 at Mitchell Park Community Center.
  • Contra Costa County will start accepting waiver applications to allow in-person classes at elementary schools.

August 17

  • Santa Clara County will start fining those who violate health orders.
  • Some residents in East Bay are asked to evacuate as fires burn along Marsh Creek Road after lightning struck.
  • Fairfield announced that the Allan Witt Community Park Renovation Project will begin in September on Phases 1 and 2.
  • Santa Cruz announced that it has been removed from the state’s COVID-19 monitoring list.
  • Napa County is fighting a fire on Hennessey Ridge Road due to the lightning storm.
  • Nevada County announces road closures and evacuations due to fire near Jones Bar Road, east of Yuba City.
  • Lightning storm sparks new wildfires across California over the weekend.
