NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—Newport Beach Police Chief Jon Lewis will retire at the end of the year, officials announced Nov. 10.

“While we will miss his leadership tremendously, Chief Lewis leaves behind an exceptional department that will ensure the continuation of excellent public safety service to our community,” City Manager Grace Leung said. “We thank Chief Lewis for his many years of service and wish him the very best in retirement.”

Deputy Chief Joe Cartwright will serve as acting chief as Newport Beach officials begin a search for a new chief.

Lewis, who has been chief since 2016, started working for Newport Beach police in 1991 and worked his way up to the top of the ranks.
