Californians can now access more than 300,000 eBooks and audiobooks through a new virtual bookshelf unveiled by the California State Library on March 26.
“With just a few clicks, any Californian can go and grab what they’re looking for on California’s Bookshelf,” said State Librarian Greg Lucas in a statement. “Trust me, we’ve tried to make something for every reader.”
In addition to eBooks and audiobooks, the platform offers more than 70,000 unique titles—over 3,500 of which are available instantly, with no wait times or hold queues.
Previously, users had to log in through a participating library to access the state’s eBook collection. Under the new system, access is open statewide and more convenient.
“From your home, a coffeeshop, or while traveling, you will always be connected to convenience with this new virtual library bookshelf,” Lucas said. “Did I mention it’s free?”
The platform is a collaboration between the California State Library and the Palace Project, which developed the app to provide seamless access to digital content from both state and local libraries.
Users who log into the Palace app through their local library will also be able to access their local library’s full eBook and audiobook catalog in addition to the state collection.
- Download the free Palace app on an iOS or Android device.
- Use the Find My Library feature to select California’s Bookshelf.
- Browse the collection, then select Get or Reserve to borrow a title.
- Create a virtual library card by filling out a short form. Location access is required once to verify residency.
- Check your email for your library card number and password, which can be used to borrow materials.
