The mother of the woman who gouged out her own eyes behind a South Carolina church has spoken out for the first time since the bizarre Feb. 6 incident.
The mom says her 20-year-old daughter, Kaylee Muthart, is still recovering at a hospital and getting used to being blind.
Churchgoers reported seeing Muthart outside the South Main Chapel holding her own eyeballs. Authorities who arrived on the scene struggled to subdue her in order to administer help.
“She is very strong, a very strong girl and she’s told me she wants to help people, and warn them to never ever touch a drug,” Tompkins told Fox.
Doctors believe that some other drug was added to the meth to cause Muthart to behave the way she did.
“You never know when you buy (illegal) drugs what will really be in them,” Tompkins said.
Tompkins says her daughter is trying to be strong, but still has moments when she can’t stop crying.
“We’re just thankful she’s still here,” Tompkins said. “It could always be much worse.”
