LOS ANGELES—A manhunt was underway July 4 for an armed suspect after two Los Angeles Police Department officers were wounded during a shootout with a suspect in the unincorporated Willowbrook area, near Compton.

The officers were injured after they confronted and exchanged gunfire with the suspect in the area of 135th Street and Broadway around 9 p.m. Wednesday, the LAPD said.

Fox 11 reported the suspect opened fire on the officers, possibly with a rifle, during the traffic stop with one officer suffering head grazing. The second officer suffered minor cuts from shattered glass.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the officers to a hospital for treatment and both are in stable condition, police said.

It was not immediately known if the suspect was wounded during the shooting or why the officers confronted them.

Police are searching for the suspect and vehicle, the LAPD said.
