The man who shot himself outside the White House on Saturday has died, according to the DC Police Department.
“Adult male has been declared deceased. We are working to notify next of kin. No further updates,” the police department wrote on Twitter.
Secret Service Spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said that the man had a single gunshot wound to the head. Secret Service did not fire any shots, she added.
The White House was on a brief lockdown according to reporters on site.
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida at the time of the shooting. They are expected back in Washington in the afternoon to attend the annual Gridiron dinner with members of the news media.
“We are aware of the incident,” White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley told CNN. “The President has been briefed.”
The Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department will lead the investigation. The man has been identified, but the information will be withheld from the public until his next-of-kin are notified.
Less than two weeks ago, a person driving a passenger car struck a security barrier near the White House.
The car did not breach the barrier. The female driver was taken into custody by Secret Service officers. There were no injuries and no shots fired during the incident.
